The Smith Grove Fire Department will be doing their annual fire hydrant maintenance starting September 3 during the hours of 9 am to 3 pm and running throughout the month of September. This is in the entire Smith Grove fire district, not just Bermuda Run (map below). There should be minor impacts on the citizens during this time.
If you experience cloudy water, you should continue running water through a bathtub or shower area faucet until it clears up. The fire dept. performs this task in a manner that typically prevents that from happening, but it is a possibility. Their staff opens and closes the hydrants slowly and ensure the water is clear before shutting down the hydrant to aid in preventing the above mentioned occurring.
Flushing fire hydrants can cause some temporary inconveniences to include:
Water discoloration: The flushing process can stir up iron and mineral deposits in the water pipes, causing the water to appear temporarily rusty or brown. This discoloration is usually harmless and doesn't pose a health risk. If the water is discolored, you can try running cold water from a tap for five minutes to see if it clears. If it doesn't clear, you can wait an hour and try again. If the water is still discolored after an hour, please call Davie County Public Utilities at 336-753-6090.
Flushing can also cause a temporary drop in water pressure.
